The Ruger™ AMERICAN bolt guns in 7.62X39, .223 (Galil mag use) and 6.5 Grendel are fantastic ranch and prepper rifles, and also are good self defense solutions for those behind enemy lines in ban states.  Unfortunately they take a proprietary magazine that doesn't have many fans.  Enter the RUK magwell.  This 100% MADE IN USA billet badassery enables the user to use MOST AK mags with the RUGER™ AMERICAN.  There's a small amount of shim-fitting (you don't cut anything) to be done, but installation will be cake for most users and most mags.

The body of the magwell is TYPE III billet 6061 aluminium (yes, "alumin-eeum"), with American spring and axis pin.  The mag catch is orderable in a standard stamped American version or our oh-so-slappable FATBOTTOM billet 4140 extended catch. 

FINE PRINT- You can either set up the magwell to run MAGPUL™ mags or (almost) everything else.  AK mags are made in a ton of countries, and some are better than others at being "normal".  The shim-fitting consists of adding shims (washers) until you get good operation with your selection. Korean and KCI mags have intermitent fitment. If you know "right-tighty, lefty-loosie" you can do this install.

We get a lot of questions about whether the RUK will fit your RUGER™ American Ranch in 7.62X39, .223 (Galil mag use) or 6.5 Grendel.  Here's how to know if it'll fit your particular gun (see also the photo below):

  • If you have a Gen 1 American with the original stock, AND it has a removable magwell that screws into the bottom of the stock, the RUK WILL FIT.
  • If you have a Gen 2 American with the RUGER stock, the RUK WILL FIT.
  • If you have an American with a SHARPS BROTHERS HEATSEAKER chassis, the RUK WILL NOT FIT.
  • If you have a MAGPUL™ HUNTER stock, the RUK WILL NOT FIT.

    Purchased for a Ruger American Ranch rifle . Followed instructions and used the provided shims. Slightly filed a few thousands off the magazine lips and everything works flawlessly. As advertised.

    Good product excellent fit in the factory stock. Wish that there was more in between sizes for the shims. Just wish they would build a chassis for the Ruger American that would take AK mags and use AR buttocks and pistol grips.

    Awesome design and execution... i use Magpul magazines, and was initially concerned by the 'must modify' feed lips on those particular mags. Silly me... just followed the step by step directions and BAM! Whole new ballgame baby. I would do this again in a heartbeat... kudos to Occam Defense!

    Fit and finish are first rate. I set it up for Pmags and so far works excellently, no issues. Every standard AK Pmag has worked perfectly, bolt slides across smoothly, ejection clean. Took about 15 min to install, quite simple using provided instructions. Metal tab AK Pmags are very tight and did not function as well but I believe with a little sanding in the right spots, they would be fine, along with a couple other brand AK mags i have, but I'm just sticking with standard AK pmags for now. If wanting to utilize other types of AK mags I'm sure using the different washers until you find the 'sweet spot' for the mags you dedicate to the rifle will work. Aesthetically the very nice aluminum build looks as if it's meant to be there. Great job guys!
