For those of us that actually train, practicing mag changes gets real old on the thumb within 5-10 minutes for most thumbs and most AKs.  We do our best to sculpt our AKM mag catches in the shop, but sheet metal can only get so smooth.  The AKM latch is also a touch on the small side, but the "enhanced" mag catches are generally WAAAAY too big, and are without exception sharp and don't feel good.  Enter the FAT BOTTOM.  The FAT BOTTOM is a 4140 billet (machined from a metal brick) enhanced mag catch with machine sculpted radii for an oh so pleasant experience when changing mags.  They're heat treated to Commie spec, then tumbled, blasted, and parkerized in house.

The FAT BOTTOM "LATCH AND PIN ONLY" includes latch and new axis rivet (use this option if you already have a tool or when ordering the OCCAM "PRO" latch tool) handy for the advance DIY or to save a few bucks over several latches.

The FAT BOTTOM  "FULL BASIC KIT" includes basic spring press compressor tool, spare spring, and new axis rivet

You'll need to drill the old rivet, carefully punch it out, and swage in the new part.

There IS some tuning involved in installing a mag catch, so if you're not handy you'll want to enlist a Kalashsmith.  We'll be launching several how-to videos prior to first shipment detailing the ins-and-outs of getting the job done right.

    Fat Bottom Mag Catch

The Fat Bottom Mag Catch is the perfect addition for my AK build. The mag catch is exceptionally well made. The tool provided made installing the mag catch spring a breeze. I could not be more pleased. Thank you for making this available.

    Very nice mag catch!

Posted by Glenn on Jun 8th 2024

Fitted as per video on YouTube. I locked it in my padded vise for precise filing. I would like to see 2 things happen in the evolution of this part. I would like to see the notch that is milled for the short leg of the spring a little shorter (I almost got into it fitting to length, and-just personal preference, would like to see a nitride finish option. I peened out the ends of the pivot pin using two- 5/16 ball bearings taped across from each other in my Columbian D45 bench vise, with the gun completely masking taped up so it wouldn’t get scratched. This worked really well. Thanks Occam!

This mag release is my favorite I’ve used so far. The spring tool it comes with makes swapping it out easy.

    Great upgraded magazine catch!

Posted by Mark on Feb 28th 2024

I needed a new magazine catch to replace the "mag lock" that's been on my rifle since new. The OCCAM steel catch fit my NDS receiver perfectly and was really easy to install. I spent a few minutes filling the catch down to fit my PMAGs and Bakelite magazines and tuned the limit tab a bit to ensure the latch opened enough to capture the mags. Highly recommend!!

    Quality of life improvement

I was curious how much better the Fat Bottom Mag Catch was over the traditional ones. Night and day difference, I have to wonder why the Russians didn’t use this size to begin with. I will be putting Fat Bottoms on all my AKs. I look forward to ordering more Occam stuff.

    Fat Bottom Mag Catch

After trying several other types of mag catches this is worlds above all the others. It's extremely well made easy on the fingers, and the genius of the installation tool made a frustrating job of tuning and installing the catch quick and easy.

    Best mag catch

Posted by Michael on May 23rd 2023

Makes reloads much nicer and loos sweet too. This needs the swage tool so an option for poors would be nice: to include a split ring and pin instead of needing the swage. When I was installing my catch, I did think that having a roll pin similar to the alg trigger would be nice to file down instead of possibly messing up the mag catch. But the process is simple enough to follow especially if you watch the install video.
